If you’ve been following the news at all in the last couple of years, you may have noticed an increasing amount of coverage of basic income. The idea is gaining momentum and is definitely getting a lot of press — from blogs to news outlets of all stripes to reports from think tanks. As public awareness of basic income grows, coverage has started to change from quick summaries of basic income and announcements of pilot projects to more critical reviews, some of which focus on the ways in which basic income could go wrong and make the plights of low-income people worse. It seems everyone with an opinion on basic income is posting it somewhere on the Internet, regardless of how well-informed —on not—that opinion is.
To explain what basic income is all about and clarify what a basic income guarantee could look like,BIWR is launching a new blog series titled Understanding Basic Income.
We will start with a clear and concise description of basic income, explain what it s wrong with our current income-support system and lay out our vision of how basic income can be implemented to revolutionize Canada’s social safety net. Along the way we will dispel some of the misinformation that is becoming common in the press.
Do you have questions about basic income? Is there some aspect of it that you want to understand better? Let us know what you would like us to cover in this series, and we’ll do our best to answer your questions. Send your ideas and questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
